Many products on the market may say all-natural or organic, but are ineffective in deterring pests or weeds and fertilizing plants. The following products have been used and recommended by our team making our environment more beautiful and functional in as healthy a manner as possible!
Organic Deer Repellent
One of the most frustrating issues faced by many of our clients is the damage foraging deer cause to their landscape. As a result, an application of Deer Scram deer repellent is one of the most requested services we receive. Deer Scram is made from organic materials including garlic, pepper and cloves, and deters deer by odor (not offensive to humans). This product decomposes more slowly and is not as water soluble as are other deer deterrent products, and can last for up to 45 days in the summer and up to 100 days during the winter. (Please note: This product also contains dried blood and meat which is part of what makes it effective; it smells like “death” to deer.)
Rodent Repellent
Two other products we use to control critter damage are Perma-till and Vole Block, used to prevent damage by Voles. These products are 100% natural and are made from slate, with no added chemicals. The products are effective due to their sharp, angular shape, which makes it uncomfortable for the rodents to dig through to get to the roots of the plants. Another product we use to repel voles and moles is castor oil based and deters the critters by odor – no poison!
Insect Repellent
During colder months, Custom Gardens relies on Dormant Oil, a mineral based product to target specific insects. This product is used when the tree is dormant, thus reducing the impact to beneficial insects. Even the eggs of pests can be destroyed using Dormant Oil; however it should never be used on evergreens and is most effective when used when temperatures are between 40 and 70 degrees.
All-Natural Herbicide and Fertilizer
When it comes to weed control, Custom Gardens has recently begun using an organic product made from corn gluten. This product is a pre-emergent and works by keeping the weeds from germinating. We have also used white vinegar; this is effective for killing the top vegetation of weeds, however does not kill the roots. For fertilizing, we rely on Bio-tone plant food which is derived from grain meals rather than synthetic.
